About New Thinking

Published since 1996, New Thinking is a free weekly email newsletter that focuses on best practice in web content management. Manage the content, not the software, is a key theme of New Thinking.

Organizations are undergoing a ‘Text Revolution.’ People read and write more today than they have ever done. They read and write, so that they can work better, learn better and play better. Content is everywhere. While commerce is selling with people, ecommerce is selling with content.

The world is full of content. In fact, it is overflowing to the point of information overload. The core question is not how do we create more content, but rather how do we create content that can be turned into knowledge by the people who read it.

In the last 15 years, organizations have seen an explosion of content. Email, intranets, websites, instant messaging, reports and presentations--there has been a deluge of content. Most organizations simply don't have the skills, strategies, policies and processes to professionally manage all this content so as to maximize value. New Thinking explores how to maximize value from web content.

The type of topics that are covered in New Thinking include the following:
  • The skills, strategies, policies and processes needed to professionally manage web content.
  • How to get the right content to the right person at the right time at the right cost, so that a profit is made.
  • How publishing is the optimal model for managing content and how to develop a publishing strategy.
  • How knowledge and content management is working (or not) within organizations.
  • How to make content underpin an organization’s strategy and objectives.
  • How to overcome the critical challenges facing knowledge and content management.
  • How to deliver value from content.
  • How to measure the cost and benefit of content, with a particular focus on task-completion metrics
  • How to define the roles and responsibilities within a publishing (content) organization.
  • How to motivate people to create high-quality content
  • How to encourage collaborative content creation.
  • How to create and manage professional publishing processes for content (create, edit, publish, promote).
  • How best to design an information architecture (Metadata, classification, navigation, search, layout and design).
  • How to write better content for the Web.
  • What the limits of content are. What knowledge cannot be transferred effectively by content.
  • How to overcome information overload.
