June 2001 New Thinking The text revolution June 25, 2001: People are writing and reading more than they ever have. From websites to mobile phones, we are witnessing a second text revolution, where the power of the word is again dominating our culture and economy. One was a technology view; a belief that, with the right software, most content problems could be solved in a cheap and efficient manner. The second was a people view; a belief that content was, at heart, about people writing, editing and publishing, with technology playing very much a supporting role. This is not what the Internet was supposed to be. Rather, we were told that the Internet was a liberating force where the small player was on a level playing pitch with the big player. This level playing pitch has allowed the big players to stamp all over the smaller ones. More The Web’s credibility problem June 04, 2001: The Web faces a growing credibility problem. It needs to be addressed urgently. Otherwise, consumer confidence will deteriorate. At the heart of the problem is the myth that industry can ‘police itself’. Most people correctly believe that government is more likely to protect a citizen’s privacy than commercial organizations who will profit by the exploitation of that very privacy. More
