December 23, 1996 Nollaig shona By Gerry McGovern This is a strange new world. Every week, over 2,000 people in over 40 countries get this email. It could never have happened in any other medium. Yes, it is all very new. But is it positive? Have the words sent out over the last six months added in some small way to a better understanding of the Internet and digital age in general? I certainly hope they have. My first love is language and the beauty of language and how carefully chosen words flow together in rhythmic symmetry. The core beauty of language is its power to communicate. I respect every one of you as a reader. I work hard to get these pieces right because I know your time is precious. So, as this year draws it last breath, I would like to say thank you and Nollaig shona diobh (the Irish for Happy Christmas to everyone). I hope that for all of you 1997 will be a positive and personally fulfilling time. I would also like to propose something for 1997. I would like to allocate occasional issues of New Thinking to your philosophical views with regard to how the digital age is developing. The pieces should be in the region of 500 words (maximum 550). The subject matter is flexible, though the piece should seek to explore in some deep way a digital age issue. I would like to stress that the approach should be philosophical in intent, as I feel strongly that right now the digital age requires philosophical thinking, so as to give it a strong foundation from which to move forward in a broad and people-encompassing way. Myself and a number of my colleagues will judge pieces for publication on two basic grounds: that the subject matter is relevant and that the piece is well written. Of course, this will not necessarily mean that a piece that is rejected is not of value, merely that in our opinion it is not appropriate for this newsletter. However, before I will try out this approach, I would like your opinion as to whether it is worth pursuing or not. Please let me know if you can, as I value this readership and do not want to lose it. If for whatever reason you can’t reply -- and if there aren’t too many negative replies -- I will assume that you’re willing to give it a try. Nollaig Shona Diobh! Gerry McGovern

I've chaired this meeting since 1994 and very few speakers have generated the same level of enthusiasm. Wit and wisdom is always an unbeatable combination." Bob Johnson, American Marketing Association “Excellent presenter ... thought-provoking and relevant. I hope we can persuade him to visit us again one day.” Malcolm Davison The British Association of Communicators in Business "Hearing Gerry McGovern speaking, one can feel that he truly masters the subject of content management.
